Projects
Current Projects:
- Our priority project for 2011-12 is to build a Permaculture Education Center for applied ecological design, conservation, research and capacity building. Utilizing integrated natural systems—e.g., bamboo and earth construction, solar energy, rainwater catchment, composting toilets and biofilter systems to recycle grey and black water, etc. The center will support environmental education efforts for the local and international community, with a primary emphasis on providing educational opportunities for local youth. Courses, such as Building with Bamboo, tackle ecological literacy and sustainability on an international and local level (through our community scholarship program) while helping us to get the Center built.
- To continue to augment environmental services and sustainable economic resources within the community of La Manzanilla through the further creation and cultivation of clumping (not invasive) polyculture bamboo plantations.
- To continue to support sea turtle conservation at La Gloria sea turtle conservation camp through our collaboration with the University of Guadalajara´s Department for Sustainable Development of Coastal Zones (DEDSZC).
- To re-initiate the administration and logistics of Tierralegre´s PET plastic recycling program initiated in 2005 to solve the insidious problem of burning plastics, limited landfill space, and a coastal zone littered with plastic bottles.
