Declaration of seven new RAMSAR sites on the Coast of Jalisco
Seven mangrove ecosystems along the Costalegre will likely be declared new RAMSAR Sites by February 2008. RAMSAR refers to the highest degree of protection for wetlands globally. RAMSAR protective status was formalized at an international conference in Iran in 1971.
DEDZSC is spearheading the project, whose objective is to promote the protection and conservation of wetlands along the coast of Jalisco. Tierralegre, Secretary of Environment for Sustainable Development of Jalisco, the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas, and the municipalities of La Huerta, Cihuatlán, and Tomatlán. Tierralegre are collaborating as well.
The seven mangrove ecosystems slated for RAMSAR status are: Barra de Navidad Lagoon, Chalacatepec Lagoon, Ermitaño Swamp/Agua Dulce Lagoon, Majahuas swamp, El Chorro Lagoon, Paramán and La Manzanilla Mangrove.
The Chamela-Cuixmala System has had RAMSAR status since 1993.
